Sea of Wine

2008. Oil on Canvas. Size: 41" x 51"

This is the first large piece that moves away from traditional landscape into more of an imagined scene. There are flowers growing on a blue background, a b
ird or dove in the sky, which is reddish-orange with yellow stars. There is also another dove flying through the sea of wine.

The rich colors and lyrical feel are inspired by the writings of the Iranian poet/mystic Ruzbihan Baqli, who's first major work, The Unveiling of Secrets was written back in the 12th Century, almost 800 years ago. He richly describes seeing God appear in a physical form during his wandering in the desert, of which his accounts were transcribed by his followers.
